Desert Pines Baptist Association works with participating member churches to coordinate needs for a variety of Mission Trips or outreach efforts. Most recently, members from the First Baptist Church in Show Low responded to Roatan Honduras to assist missionaries from FBC Show Low in establishing a presence of service in this community.
The Journey of 2
Ron McDonald and Jamie Rich-McDonald recently (02/25/12) led a Team to the Island of Roatan, Honduras. Team Members were: Fran and Laurel Hostler, Mark and Ben Jacobs, Sally Summerlin, Cole Wallace, Quenton Howe and Ron & Jamie.
This was the fifth mission Ron and Jamie have gone on to Roatan and the fourth one as the Team Leaders.
The first couple of missions consisted of the team mainly doing project with some evangelism being done during and in between the projects. The projects consisted of working on a water system, building a house, putting a partial roof on a church as well as several smaller projects.
The Team would also visit people, tell them about the saving grace of Jesus and pass out food, bibles and miscellaneous. items such as flip flops, wash clothes and sewing kits.
The last three missions, and particularly the last two, have centered more on evangelism. The home visits that included a gift of food, Bibles and miscellaneous. items turned into a “Back Pack Ministry”. A back pack generally consists of approximately 5 lbs. each of rice, beans, flour, lard, dish soap, flip flops, toiletries and a Bible. Recently we started adding sugar and wash clothes. The wash clothes are made by ladies from First Baptist church; and some are made by friends of the ladies at FBC. These are a big hit in Roatan.
This last mission the team performed the BPM (Back Pack Ministry) at several small Colonias and Villages. Locations were picked if they were either rarely or have never visited. People visited were told about the love of Jesus and how to obtain salvation through Jesus Christ.
In addition, the Team still fit in projects where possible. During the mission to Roatan in February 2012 the Team also dry walled a ceiling for Mike and Keri Tichi at their school (Care 4 Communities), located in the Colonia in Sandy Bay.
After their second mission to Roatan Ron and Jamie felt the call to full-time service on the island. They prayed about it, they asked others to pray about it, they sought the advice of other Christians. After their fourth mission to Roatan they came to the understanding that God was calling them into full-time service on Roatan.
Therefore they created The Journey of 2 and on February 25, 2012 Ron and Jamie led their last team to Roatan. After the team’s eight days of service on the island were completed, the team came home while Ron and Jamie stayed and began their full-time ministry.
Ron is giving technical service to Living Water 4 Roatan. A water system that is the brainchild of Henry and Francis Zittrower. Where children would have to carry water up hill to their homes, they now have water piped right to their properties. This is an ongoing work that consists of upgrading, maintenance and repair.
Ron and Jamie are also continuing the Back Pack Ministry and hope to host teams who would like to visit areas of the island; particularly the east end of the island, that get few visitors.
They can also host teams that want to do projects.
In addition, Ron and Jamie have met and befriended and are working with Mike and Kerri Tichi. The Tichi’s have begun a ministry in the Colonia in Sandy Bay called Care 4 Communities. They obtain sponsors for kids who provide scholarships for them to go to school. They also teach English and help them with their homework. Mike began a sports ministry. With the help of a local land owner and several of the local kids they have build a multi-purpose sports court. A faith based ministry that meets the needs of the people and teaches them how to work together.
